This guide is an introduction to some key information resources for Sport Management.

It includes information on how to find books, journal articles, relevant databases, newspaper articles. It also provides links to sport web sites and other resources that might be useful to your research.

Searching the Catalogue - where to start

Keyword Searching

Before you start searching your need to:


  • Determine the key concepts - Your research topic/essay question will help you identify the major concepts and keywords e.g. sport fans, sponsorship, sports media.
  • Define your search terms - think of synonyms and alternate terms e.g sport or leisure or recreation; fans or participants or supporters; sponsorship or funding.
  • If you have trouble identifying your keywords and concepts use either the "Sage Dictionary of Leisure Studies"  or Dictionary of Lesiure, Travel and Tourism".  Or ask for Assistance at the Research Help Desk to help you identify alternative terms and keywords.
  • Truncate words with asterisk* to find plurals or variants e.g. sponsor* will retrieve sponsor, sponsors, sponsorship.
  • Put Phrases in quotations marks if you are not combining it with other keywords, e.g. "sports management" or "sports sponsorship".
  • Limit your search results to specific formats, publications dates and locations.
  • Each catalogue record for an item contains hypertext links to alternate related subjects/topics, follows the links if not sure of keywords.
