Scirus - a search engine for the sciences. It can be useful for getting background information on a topic.

Google Scholar - enables you to search the internet for scholarly literature. You can set up Google Scholar to show whether the La Trobe University Library has the full text for items you find in Google Scholar. Instructions on how to do this are available on the library webpage.

 

Internet searching hints

  • Use sites your lecturer has recommended in your unit materials.
  • Use Google Scholar scholar.google.com.au/  If you find a reference to a journal article, check if the library has the full text of the article www.lib.latrobe.edu.au/.  Set up your preferences on your home computer for google scholar.
  • Use Google to locate information and then check it's credibility as above.  To maximise chances of getting credible information in your results use the hints below about searching in particular domains.

Why can't I just google?

  • Information is everywhere!   It’s just so easy to google and use something that looks relevant…..so why can’t you just google?
  • Best evidence?  Regardless of what tool is used, you should aim to find the best evidence to:
    • Inform and support your writing in university assignments;
    • Inform and support your decision making as researchers/ scientists once you graduate.
