What is EndNote?

  • Creates in-text citations in Word documents;
  • Creates formatted bibliographies;
  • Imports references from library journal article databases and catalogues;
  • Sorts and stores references.

 

 

Where can I get a copy of EndNote?

EndNote software updates

 

Opening EndNote

  • Click on Start > Programs >EndNote> EndNote Program.
  • Select Open an existing EndNote library.
  • Click on Browse.
  • Select the library you want and click on Open.
 

Creating an EndNote library

  • Open EndNote.
  • Select File> New.
  • Name and save the library (you don't need to supply a file extension as EndNote will add the extension .enl automatically.

 

 

Saving an EndNote library

Saving a copy of your EndNote library

  • Open your EndNote library.
  • Select File>Save a copy.
  • Name the library and choose where to save it.
  • Click on Save.

 

To back up additional files such as modified styles, filters and connection files

  • Use your file management software.
  • The default location for these files is C:/ Program files/ Endnote.

 

 
 

Opening an EndNote library automatically

  • You can specify library/ies to open automatically when EndNote starts up.
  • Open the library/ies you would like to have open automatically.
  • Go to Edit>Preferences>Libraries.
  • Select an option from the When EndNote starts drop down menu, e.g. Open the specified libraries.
  • Click on Add open libraries.
  • Click on Apply>OK.

 

 

Customizing the EndNote library display

  • To change the fields displayed (e.g. to display all authors in the Author field box), go to Edit> Preferences> Display Fields.
  • Choose the fields you want to display from the drop down menu.
  • Click Apply> OK.
  • These settings will now apply to all of your EndNote libraries.
