Finding Books on a Reading List

The best way to find books on your reading list is a Catalogue title search.

Note Make sure you are entering the title of the book (in italics) and not the title of a chapter in the book

eg Rose, D. (2007) "A girl from a whole other race". In Women and race in contemporary US writing, ed. Kelly Lynch Reams. New York: Palgrave Macmillan


Look at the following information in the Catalogue record for the book

Location which collection is it in?

Bundoora General - level 3 books for loan

Reserve - level 2, 3 hour loan

Call no. or shelf no. for locating the book on the shelves.

810.9355 R288w

Status Is the book available or is it on loan?

   place a hold if the book is on loan

 

 

Finding books on a topic / Keyword searching

To find a list of books on a particular topic for an essay

1. Determine your Keywords - 2 or 3 words to describe the topic eg Gothic literature

2. Enter your search into the Catalogue KEYWORD search

3. Evaluate and refine your results

Sort by date to see the most recent publications first

Add another search term eg you may just want American gothic literature

 

 

Subject searches

Subject headings can focus your search.  They group books on the same topic together.

No need to use capitals

Leave out punctuation


Use truncation * to find all forms of a word eg

  • postcolonial*

-finds postcolonial and postcolonialism

  • wom*n

-finds woman and women


Use brackets and the word or for synonyms eg

animal* (myth* or fables)


Use quotes for phrases eg "literary theory"


Use subject heading links to find more books on the same topic

eg Women and literature -- England -- History -- 19th century.
