Understanding citations             Print Page

Citation types

Use the links below to identify the different citation types and how to find them using the catalogue.

The examples below are all from your reading list

What is a citation

A citation is a brief description of one specific resource. You can actually tell what type of resource is being described by looking carefully at a citation. The elements of a citation are clues to the type of resource and how to find it in the Library.

Finding books, book chapters and articles by their citation is a basic research skill.  Why?

  •  for finding the essential and further readings from your subject guide or reading list.
  •  for following up relevant references from the bibliographies in books and journal articles.
  •  for finding the full text of journal articles from a database citation

Elements of a citation may include:

Author(s) Editor(s) Title of the book

Title of a chapter in a book

Edition (if not the first edition) Year of publication

Publisher Place of publication

Page number(s) Title of the journal

Volume & issue details

Title of the journal article Web address

***Select the links on the left for information on how to identify the different citations and how to find them using the catalogue.

Book citation

A book citation has:-

  • one title
  • one or more authors
  • publication details (publisher and place of publication)

To find a book citation in the catalogue select  TITLE search and put in the first part of the title.

Book Chapter citation

A book chapter citation has

  • 2 titles
  • the word IN - this is the best clue to identifying a book chapter citation
  • Publication details

The word IN is the best clue for identifying book chapters

NOTE To Find the chapter of the book look up the title of the book NOT the 'title of the chapter'

ie Search  Madwoman in the attic   NOT a dialogue of self and soul

Journal article citation

A journal citation has

  • 2 titles
  • The 'Article title'
  • The Journal title
  • Volume issue and page details

Find the article using the catalogue

step 1

Look up the Journal title in the catalogue

Step 2.

If there is more than one entry for the journal title look at all entries.

Often there is an entry for the print holdings and one for the electronic version.

There is only one entry for this journal

read the holdings carefully and choose a link that has issues from 2008

Choose the link to Project Muse or Expanded Academic for the 2008 Issues

Step 3

Select Expanded Academic or Project Muse for the 2008 issues

Browse to Volume 48 issue no. 2 and scroll down throught the table of contents to the article title at page 305.

Step 4

Select the PDF version of the article because this is the same as the printed Journal and you do not have to reference your source as an electronic document.  If it is only available in HTML as a single web page, you will need to reference it in your bibliography as an electronic document including the Database and web address (URL)
