Costing

Costing

It is a useful part of research data management planning to establish the costs of research data management for your project and include them in the proposed budget of your grant application if the funding rules allow.

Briefly, you should consider direct costs such as:

  • salary costs for team members involved in research data management work
  • storage and hosting costs
  • costs for equipment and supplies required for research data management
  • cost of digitisation and transcription, if required
  • subcontracting costs for any elements of your research data management that will be carried out by external parties.

You might also consider indirect costs:

  • overheads, such as storage space for physical primary research materials and any portion of general supplies used for research data management
  • general and administrative costs related to research data management.
