What is a film review?

A film review is an evaluation of the many elements that make up a film such as its' aesthetic, entertainment, social or cultural value.

They appear in sources such as newspapers and popular journals like The Age or Rolling Stone. You can also find reviews in scholarly cinema journals such as Screen, Film Quarterly or Continuum, and on a wide range of websites.

Before you search

  • Find out the film or books' release date to search for reviews from when it was first released.
  • Identify the director or author of the film as this will target results. For example, a keyword search for The Piano,  will find anything with the word Piano in it.  A search for The Piano and Jane Campion should retrieve more relevant results.
