About Writing

At university you will need to complete a number of written assessments for each of your subjects. These all come with a 'due date', which can make the submission of your work seem like an event. However, the completion of good academic writing, which meets the expectations of your lecturers, is a process.

Good academic writing is well-structured, logical and cohesive, supported by evidence and properly referenced, while also fulfilling the specific subject content requirements of each individual assessment.

What you will learn

  • how to interpret topics and understand the expectations of different written assessments

  • strategies for doing assignment writing as a ‘process’ with planned steps

  • how to plan and structure your writing

  • how to build content, using brainstorming, research and evidence

  • how to develop an appropriate academic writing style that is both concise and cohesive

  • effective methods for reviewing and editing written work prior to submission.
