Read and Publish FAQs

The corresponding author must be affiliated with La Trobe University for the publication to be eligible, and must use their La Trobe institutional email when submitting.
See the Discounts for LTU Authors page for a list of publishers covered by Read and Publish agreements
All La Trobe University Graduate Researchers are eligible to use the La Trobe Read & Publish agreements when publishing research conducted at the University. To be eligible you must submit your paper using your La Trobe institutional email (name@latrobe.edu.au) and remember to put La Trobe University as your primary affiliation.
Not all journals from a publisher will necessarily be covered by a Read and Publish agreement. Go to the Discounts for LTU Authors page and see whether the journal publisher is listed. Follow any instructions. For our Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) pubblisher agreements, follow the link to the relevant CAUL Publisher page and check the journal list under the “Key Facts” heading. For other agreements, follow any links to coverage details. Ask the Researcher Liaison Team if you have any queries at all.
A capped agreement means that there is a specific number of APC waivers available for the year. These waivers are across all institutions participating in the agreement. Information about the progress of caps for CAUL agreements is available on the relevant CAUL publisher page, and a summary of all CAUL cap progress is available in the Reports tab of the CAUL Read & Publish Guide
See also FAQ “What is a capped agreement”
Hybrid Journals
For any given calendar year of a capped agreement, if an article is accepted after a cap has been reached, it will be published behind a paywall unless an Article Processing Charge (APC) is paid to make the article Open Access. If publishing behind a paywall, the author should deposit their Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) in OPAL, the LTU Institutional Repository. The Research team will manage embargoes and ensure the AAM is available to everyone as soon as possible. Progress of caps is available on the relevant CAUL publisher page. Caps are reset at the beginning of the year. Cap details for the Nature journals direct agreement are on the Nature Agreement page.
Open Access Journals
The Wiley agreement is the only capped agreement which includes Gold (fully open) journals. The APC waiver applies at submission for these journals. If a cap is close to being reached, notification of specific dates will be put on the Wiley CAUL page. Any date after which submitted articles are ineligible for an APC waiver will be posted on the Wiley CAUL page.
Neither La Trobe University nor the LTU Library has funds for direct payment of APCs. The CAUL Read & Publish agreements are negotiated by the Council of Australian University Librarians on behalf of Australian universities and libraries elect to participate in any specific publisher agreement. The agreements mean that payment for access (read) is combined with payment to publish (APC waiver). The library also has some Read & Publish and membership agreements with publishers enabling discounted APC fees for a number of gold (fully open) journals. These publishers are listed on the Discounts for LTU Authors page.

NOTE: this list includes all CAUL agreement publishers, so you will need to check the Discounts for LTU Authors page., or the separate CAUL publisher pages if necessary to confirm that La Trobe University library is part of any particular CAUL Read & Publish agreement.
