ORCID at La Trobe

What is an ORCID ID and why do I need one?

The Open Researcher and Contributor ID or ORCID is an open, non-profit organisation that creates and maintains a registry of unique researcher identifiers.

A unique ORCID identification number is assigned to everyone who registers on the ORCID website. This number is like a scholarly fingerprint - it is yours alone and will not change, You can take it with you wherever your career leads you, and it will distinguish your research outputs and ensure they are correctly attributed and counted for your research impact.

We recommend that all La Trobe researchers create their own ORCID identifier and attach it to their work when submitting manuscripts and datasets.

Register for an ORCID ID

Get credit for your work by linking your ORCID to your My Publications record.

Use the blue button on your home page to register or to link to an existing ORCID identifier.

How you can use your ORCID?

An ORCID ID should be shared as often as possible. Here are some ideas:

  • link your ORCID to your My Publications profile
  • include your ORCID when you submit  articles and chapters to publishers
  • list your ORCID on websites, blogs, email signatures, public profiles and social media
  • authorise La Trobe University to access your ORCID ID – we can help you keep it up-to-date
  • enable automatic updates to CrossRef and Datacite so that new publications and datasets will be added to your ORCID profile
  • enhance your ORCID profile with your professional information
  • provide links from your ORCID profile to your other identifiers (e.g.  Scopus, ResearcherID or LinkedIn)
