About the Archives

La Trobe University was formed by the La Trobe University Act (1964). The third university to open in Victoria, La Trobe was intended to "serve the community and in particular the citizens of Victoria...by making knowledge available for all...". While La Trobe opened its gates at Bundoora to the first 552 students in 1967, its history spans 150 years, seven campuses, and more than a dozen antecedent institutions.

The University Archives' collections document this rich history of research, education, community engagement, and student life and activism.

Our collections include:

  • photographs of life on LTU's campuses
  • maps, plans, photographs, and other records documenting the building and evolution of LTU's campuses
  • student publications, such as newsletters and magazines
  • governance materials such as minutes, meeting papers, strategic plans, and policies
  • artefacts including clothing, banners, trophies, and honour boards
  • personal papers and correspondence
