Newspapers

Where to start

You can search multiple news sources at once via Search the Library collections. Newspapers are excluded by default so click or tap on the Newspapers search link in the top tool bar. Within a search you can choose newspaper from the resource menu.

Use quotation marks, for example "The Sydney Morning Herald", to look for a particular news source and choose the title from the drop down menu.

The News Media Guide provides an introduction to searching key news databases that La Trobe University Library subscribes to.

The Databases Guide - Newspapers gives links to our current and historical newspaper databases.

The Library also holds a number of historical newspaper series on microform, however the majority of these are available via other sources.

Trove

Trove is an online search engine developed by the National Library of Australia. At the click of a button, you can access a huge repository of Australian material. Trove contains extensive digitised copies of many historical newspapers.

Tips for finding newspaper articles in Trove

  • Use the names of people involved.
  • Try to think of your topic in media language rather than academic or theoretical language.
  • You need to use the terms /language used at time as Trove searches text digitally and is text-matching not searching current keywords or subjects.
  • Note that many traditional, mainstream media sources have a history of not reporting, under-reporting and/or misrepresenting events and issues involving people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, so you will often need to think creatively about the language used and even look beyond them to compare with alternative news sources. Some of that language may be racist.
  • Restrict the search to the approximated date of a particular incident or refine a simple search by Decade (via left bar) to see the historical specificity of a term or issue.
  • Using advanced search, you can select Victorian (or Victorian and National) newspapers only and filter by specific newspapers by going to ‘[show titles]’.
  • Advanced search allows you to add place, ethnicity, name and more details to your search.
  • On home page, click the title of newspaper & you will see brief description of paper & graph of what’s been digitised to date.
  • Link to other primary sources (pictures and books) on the right hand side.
