Creative Commons
everything you need to know about finding, using and attributing images using Creative Commons
What is Creative Commons?
Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organisation that provides free licences to content creators.
Content which has a Creative Commons licence may be free to download, adapt, distribute, and transmit without having to ask permission.
There is no single creative commons search site, some places to start include:
- CC SearchSearches freely reusable images from a growing number of websites and databases
- Wikimedia CommonsSearch for images, sounds and videos
Always check the exact terms of the licence before using an image.
Attribution
You can use Creative Commons materials as long as you follow the license conditions. One condition of these licenses is that the creator of the work is acknowledged.
Attribution example for an image accessed via Wikimedia Commons:
Sea Otter Morrow Bay 13 by Mike Baird is licensed under CC BY 2.0
