Find policy and legal information

Archaeological research and particularly practice and cultural heritage management are governed by a number of local, state and federal regulations in order to ensure the ethical protection and preservation of heritage and the environment. Based on this, it is important to know how and where to access policy and legal documents.

You can search, but the best best way to find reports is to browse by the following collections or topics and then filter by different facets (such as additional topics, sources, resource types and metrics):

Key collections:

  • Regional development
  • State of Australian cities
  • Climate change adaption
  • Public Administration & Governance

Key topics:

  • World Heritage areas
  • Built and natural environments
  • Indigenous
  • Cultural policy
  • Politics and social issues

Use site:.edu.au to find Australian educational websites, which will help you find credible and authoritative background information and educational resources.

Use site:.gov.au to find Australian government sites or site:.vic.gov.au to find Victorian government ones, which will help you find data and policy information.

Add filetype:pdf to this to find only PDF documents (this is particularly helpful for finding policy documents)

Be wary of .com and .org sites as they are more likely to have a commercial, political or other bias.

Example:

If you need to find government documents on Aboriginal heritage in Australia and Victoria, try these searches:

  • aboriginal heritage site:.gov.au filetype:pdf
  • aboriginal heritage site:.vic.gov.au filetype:pdf
