Add/edit citations in Word

When downloading Zotero, a Zotero tab should automatically be installed in your Word Toolbar.

Can't see the toolbar?

  • Close Word, open Zotero.
  • In Zotero, click Edit menu / Preferences / Cite button / Word Processors tab.
  • Click "(Re)Install MS Word Add-in" button.
  • Reopen Word.

Add citation

Click the Zotero tab in Word to see the Zotero menu.

Place the cursor in your document where you want the citation to appear.

Click the 'Add/Edit Citation' button on the toolbar.  The first time you do this, you may be asked to select a citation style.  Choose 'La Trobe APA6 Style'. If this style is not listed - install the style. See 'Add referencing style' for instructions,.

Search for the reference you want to cite and press Enter. Zotero will add the citation at your cursor.

Edit citation

Select the citation within your Word document and click the 'Add/Edit Citation' button. When the citation appears in the Zotero search bar, click the citation to add page numbers or other text, or to change the format in which the citation is displayed.  Additional citations can also be added.

Remember to check the Academic Reference Tool to ensure the citation is in the correct format.

Insert Reference List/Bibliography

At the end of your paper, click the 'Insert Bibliography' button. Your reference list/bibliography will appear, and new citations will be added automatically.

You can change referencing styles by going to 'Document Preferences'.
