Read & Publish

What is Read and Publish?

Also known as Publish and Read Agreements or Transformative Agreements, these have transformed the business model of traditional scholarly publishing between authors, readers and libraries from subscription-based to an Open Access model.

How does it work?

This model works by combining payment for reading and publishing into one fee paid by the institution or library.  Fees which were traditionally paid by Universities for access to content to read, instead provide the opportunity to read as well as publish open research without incurring individual Article Processing Charges (APCs).  This helps both authors and institutions gradually tip the balance of their publishing output towards open access, making the process easier and more financially viable.

La Trobe University works collaboratively with CAUL and publishers to offer a model which opens up access to peer-reviewed research from us and for us.

What are the benefits?

There are many benefits of Read & Publish agreements which include:

  • it is transformative - the open access landscape is dynamic with publishers providing models which have the potential to take your research further and transform global communities.
  • It is mandate friendly - most publishers will work with you to ensure your funding requirements are met through this system.
  • It is profile-raising - your work is more accessible and visible to a greater number of people, thereby increasing your profile and increasing your citations.
