Adding resources to a Reading List video

This video demonstrates how to add resources to your reading list, including eBooks, print books, journal articles, and videos.

Resource types

Print book

Using the bookmarking extension, create the bookmark from the Library record – the required fields will populate within the resource record, you can then add to a list of your choosing and add any additional comments for your students in the student notes. It is also important to set the importance status.

For books that are only available in print, there will be a 'view availability' button automatically added next to the resource to allow students to request/collect the physical item from their campus library.

For books that the Library does not currently hold, add the record with as much detail as you can and set the importance status with the relevant Library to purchase option. Please action this as soon as possible as delivery from an international supplier may take months.

Important copyright information

  • For a book that is divided into chapters you can photocopy or scan up to 1 chapter.

  • The same chapter from the same edition can be used multiple times and across multiple subjects.

  • Different chapters from the same edition can be used provided they’re in use for different subjects (e.g. multiple chapters from the same edition cannot be used for the same subject).  Note: different modes of study for the same subject do not constitute different subjects (e.g. an online mode and an on-campus version of the same subject).

  • For a book that is not divided into chapters you can photocopy or scan up to 10% of the number of pages. Note: the 10% cannot include 2 complete chapters. These must be communicated as one PDF (e.g., selected pages must be included in the one digitisation request).

Chapter from a print book

Using the bookmarking extension, create the bookmark from the Library record – fields will populate within the resource record, however, to ensure all the necessary information for accurate referencing is available you will need to add additional fields.

From the ‘add field’ drop down menu select ‘Has part (chapter, article, etc.)’ and click add.

Adding chapter field

Then include the following additional information in the newly generated fields:

  1. Resource type: Chapter.

  1. Title for a full chapter or selection of pages: 'Chapter title' OR 'Title of book [Selected pages]'.

  1. Add additional fields for Author and Pages (if there are multiple page ranges, add all ranges to a single field).

Once these additional fields are added, save the record and you can then add to a list of your choosing. Add any additional comments for your students in the student notes. It is also important to set the importance status.

If a digitised copy of the chapter is required use the elipses next to the reading and select  'Request digitisation'.  Guidance on this can be found on the Request a digitisation page.

eBook

Using the bookmarking extension create the bookmark from either the Library record or from the eBook itself (from its online platform).

For books that the Library does not currently have access to, add the record with as much detail as you can and set the importance status with the relevant Library to purchase option. Please action this as soon as possible as the library may need to negotiate licensing.

For Open Education Resources (OER) - Textbooks bookmark these from direct online book or from the Library record if there is one. Please ensure the resource type is set as 'Book' not Web page and check that the metadata has been captured correctly, you may need to edit the bookmark to add any missing information.

Some eBooks have additional instructions for students, such as creating a personal account or limitations on users simultaneously accessing the resource – in these instances it is important to create the bookmark from the Library Search record, rather than the resource itself, so students can check these user notes.

Current platforms that require this include:

  • Cambridge Core

  • Clinical Key

  • VitalSource and

  • Ebsco e-Audio

If you are unsure of which eBook platforms have important user notes or where to find this information in the Library Search reach out to the library for assistance.

The required fields will populate within the resource record, check that the eBook permalink is included in the ‘Web address’ field and that the 'Online resource' box is ticked. You can then add to a list of your choosing and add any additional comments for your students in the student notes. It is also important to set the importance status.

Chapter from an eBook

You can link to multiple chapters in an eBook from our most popular platforms: Oxford University Press, Elsevier, Proquest Ebook Central, Ebscohost eBook Collection and SpringerLink. Navigate to the required chapter within the eBook and create a bookmark from the first page of that chapter.

Check that the metadata has been captured correctly, you may need to edit the bookmark to add any missing information.

For chapters from other eBook platforms, please create a bookmark to the eBook, and then use the Student notes to direct your students to the required chapter. This is due to licensing restrictions from the publisher platforms.

You can then add to a list of your choosing and set the importance status

Open Education Resources (OER) - Textbooks

Bookmark these from the direct online book or from the Library record. If possible link to the required chapter. If not add a student note guiding students to the required chapter reading. Please ensure the resource type is set as 'Book' or book chapter, if linking to a chapter, and not set as Web page. Check that the metadata has been captured correctly, you may need to edit the bookmark to add any missing information.

Online journal article

Using the bookmarking extension create the bookmark from the article itself (from its online platform, not a PDF).

The required fields will populate within the resource record, check that the permalink is included in the ‘Web address’ field and that the 'Online resource' box is ticked. You can then add to a list of your choosing and add any additional comments for your students in the student notes. It is also important to set the importance status.

Print journal article

If the journal is held in print at La Trobe use the bookmarking extension to create the bookmark from the Library record to the title of Journal – the required fields will populate within the resource record. You will need to add the details of the article itself, however, to ensure all the necessary information for accurate referencing is available you will need to add additional fields.

From the ‘Add field’ drop down menu select ‘Has part (chapter, article etc) and click Add.

Adding part journal article

Then include the following additional information in the newly generated fields:

  1. Resource type: Article.

  1. Add additional fields for Author, Volume, Issue, Date/year and Pages.

You can then request digitisation of the article (see: Request a digitisation). You are then able to add to a list of your choosing and add any additional comments for your students in the student notes. It is also important to set the importance status.

Important copyright information

  • You can copy 1 article from an edition of a journal, newspaper, or magazine.

  • You can copy 2 or more articles from an edition of a journal, newspaper, or magazine only if the articles relate to the same subject matter.

Library videos

This information relates to library videos only – those which are accessed via Library search requiring users to login with their La Trobe credentials. For general online AV materials see: Web resources.

Using the bookmarking extension create the bookmark from the video itself – the required fields will populate within the resource record, you can then add to a list of your choosing and add any additional comments for your students in the student notes. It is also important to set the importance status.

Web resources

These resources may include web pages, YouTube clips or other open or freely available internet resources.

Using the bookmarking extension create the bookmark from the resource itself from its online platform/webpage. The required fields will populate within the resource record, check that the permalink is included in the ‘Web address’ field and that the 'Online resource' box is ticked. You can then add to a list of your choosing and add any additional comments for your students in the student notes. It is also important to set the importance status

Note: Do not link directly to a pdf document. Ensure that the link is created from the landing page for the resource and not directly to the pdf. You may need to add a note for students to guide them to the required resource.
