Adding H5P to the LMS
Adding H5P to your subject
H5P content can be embedded (added) in any LMS Activity or Resource that uses the Text editor, (e.g., in Labels, Quiz questions, Lessons, Books, Pages, Forums etc.). This enables students to view the H5P content inline with other content you have put in these activities compared with opening a separate view.
Embedding H5P can only be done after you have first created a H5P activity in your content bank or have a local .H5P file to upload.
A limited set of H5P activity types have been enabled for use within the La Trobe LMS. If there is demand, more will be considered based on meeting accessibility requirements.
Adding a link to H5P content
- Within the subject site, access the "Content Bank" located in the left-side burger menu. The Content Bank is where H5P activities are created and stored.
- In the Content Bank, select "Add" and then choose the activity you'd like to create.
- Follow the prompts and use the H5P editor to build and create your activity. When complete, ensure that you select "save" to finalize and save it to the content bank, where you will then see it appear.
Adding H5P as an Activity
Once your H5P content is created and exists in the content bank, it can be made student-accessible in two ways. The first way is to add a H5P activity link, which students then click to open the H5P in a new browser tab. Note that whilst this method does work well enough, it's generally pedagogically better to embed activities contextually alongside other work, such as in moodle books, pages, lessons etc rather than leaving them stand-alone.
- Start with subject editing turned on, and select "add an activity or resource" in the section you'd like to add the H5P content link.
- Select the "H5P" activity type
3. From there, give the activity a name/title. And then select the file picker icon to open the file chooser-
4. From there, select "Content Bank" as the source, and then the H5P activity that you'd like to use. Click "Select this file" to add it in when prompted then save and close the page.
5. The activity link will then appear in the LMS and can be accessed by students
Embed the H5P activity in-line
The other more preferred way of utilising a H5P activity is to embed in along-side subject content, such as within a moodle book, lesson, forum, page etc. You can embed H5P anywhere there is an ATTO text editor (pictured below).
1. In the editor, select the"H5P" button
2. This then opens the file content picker. Select "Browse"
3. And on the next page, the content bank and associated H5P activity.
4. After clicking on the desired H5P activity, click "select this file" followed by "Insert" to embed the activity in the page.
5. You'll then see a shape/box to signify where the activity will appear-
6. Save and view the webpage and activity to then see the working H5P embed.
