Tips and traps
Use the following tips and traps as a checklist for:
- getting started with using H5P interactive content; or
- to review your knowledge of H5P best practice.
TIPS
- Start with one of the simple H5P content types e.g. Accordion, Quiz question set.
- Accessibility: mobile access - test on a smartphone. H5P is mobile-friendly but any content (text, images, video) that you add may appear too little to read or view on smaller screens.
- The H5P copy and paste functions allow you to copy from one subject and paste into another.
- Accessibility: headers - where possible, set the header in H5P to H4 (e.g. Accordion) for the best usability on all devices/screenreaders.
- Accessibility: alternative format for H5P content - if you plan to use one of the more complex H5P content types, (Virtual Tour 360, Interactive video, Branching Scenario), begin by creating your accessible alternative format (Word or PDF document)
- Mathematical expressions can be added to all text fields in the H5P authoring tool. There are three different ways you can use to let H5P know this is LaTeX:
-someLaTeX
for inline LaTeX, commonly used as part of sentences within a text
-someLaTeX
or optionallysomeLaTeX
for block LaTeX, commonly used as a standalone formula that will be centered
- Course presentation - advanced technique: try the Active Surface Mode (H5P Behaviour Settings) to create a more customised, gamified navigation and activity. The setting removes the usual navigation controls for the end user. Use Go To Slide to navigate. NOTE: This setting can NOT be changed once set.
TRAPS
-
H5P should only be used for formative learning activities. It is possible to see answers to quizzes in the web page source code. The H5P vendor and community recommend to limit the use of H5P to formative learning activities: http://eworks.edu.au/blog/2017/08/h5p-moodle-plugin-tips-for-getting-started/
The Moodle quiz and assignment are more appropriate and recommended for summative assessments. -
After adding an H5P activity, the Cancel button does not function the same as with other Moodle activities. The H5P screen is not replaced by the previous screen as expected and an extra step is needed to navigate away.
- Branching scenarios: Do not drag and drop videos when adding them - they start playing and then you can't get back to the editor. The recommended way to add video is to upload them into EchoVideo and link to them as explained above. That way you can be sure they will be viewable in all browsers.
