La Trobe support for publishing open access books

La Trobe University Library supports Open Access Book publishing via memberships of ‘Subscribe to Open’ publishers. This model, common with journals and some book publishers, offers next year’s content as Open Access if an annual target subscription is reached. It’s free for authors and depends on subscriber participation. Subscribing institutions gain access to the publisher’s book archives and upcoming scholarly monographs if sufficient funds are raised.
The library has memberships with MIT Press Direct to Open (Massachusetts institute of Technology), and Knowledge Unlatched.

MIT Press Direct to Open (D2O)
La Trobe library has a licenced commitment to MIT Press’s Direct to Open (D2) subscription membership program. This program provides funding toward enabling Open Access to MIT Press digital monographs.
Time period: 2022 – present
Coverage: La Trobe supports the complete collection (approximately 90 titles)

What this means for authors: authors can submit their publication to MIT via the usual channels, however there is no specific process to publish the book as Open – it will depend on the whether the D2O program achieves the funding benchmark, wherein all published books for that year will be made open.

Knowledge Unlatched
Knowledge Unlatched works directly with publishers to facilitate the publishing of Open Access books and journals. KU collects pledged funds from libraries and academic institutions each year and pass them on to publishers to cover the cost of publishing schoarly books and journals as Open Access.
Libraries can choose to support the full KU Select HSS package each year, or specific subject packages (e.g., Anthropology, History, Politics, etc.). For more information see the KU for Beginners page.
Coverage:

  • Annual books & video pledge 2024
  • Berghanhn Migration and Development Studies 2024-26
  • Language Science Press
  • Knowledge Unlatched 2017, 2018, 2019
  • Rougledge Gender Studies 2020-2022
