Tools for access
Some of our eBook platforms have in-built accessibility options to benefit users with visual impairment or any special accessibility requirements. These options can include the use of read aloud software, altering text size, or background and font colouring.
Common screen reader software information:
EBSCO eBooks
EBSCO tests specifically with the JAWS, NVDA, TalkBack and VoiceOver screen readers for online eBook support. They recommend the following screen reader and browser combinations:
- Desktop: Chrome + JAWS
- Desktop: Firefox + NVDA
- Desktop: Safari + VoiceOver
- Desktop: Edge + NVDA
- Mobile (Apple): Safari + VoiceOver
- Mobile (Android): Chrome + TalkBack

ProQuest eBook Central
ProQuest’s Accessibility Mode is available on laptops and desktops, it is not available on phones or tablets. They recommend the following screen reader and browser combinations:
- Chrome or Edge + JAWS
- Safari + VoiceOver

Other useful tips
You can use the Midnight Lizard plugin if you are reading an eBook in a browser – this will allow you to change the background and font colour of an eBook on a laptop or PC.
If you are reading an eBook using Adobe Reader you can alter the colour display: Edit > Preferences > Accessibility > Check ‘Replace Document Colours’ > Select ‘Custom Colour’ > make your colour selection.
