  • If the paper is published in a journal or book it should be cited according to those rules.
  • The location of a conference should not be included unles it forms part of the relevant forum e.g. Law Institute of Victoria

The details which must be included in the footnote are:

Notes
  • See AGLC rule 7.15
  • If you have obtained material from a website and it is not published in print elsewhere, then it is necessary to cite it in a way that enables the reader to access the material in the same way you did.

You should cite:

  1. Author(s) — Should appear exactly as they do on the title page of the source, but initials in names should not be followed by full stops or separated by spaces for multiple initials. If there are two or three authors separate the last two names with the word ‘and’. If there are more than three authors, identify only the first one then put ‘et al’ (meaning ‘and others’).
  2. Document title — Put in single quotation marks.
  3. Website name — Provide the name of the website or of the organisation whose website the document appears on in italics. Where the author's name is identical to the name of the website, you should not include the author.
  4. Document Type — Put in parentheses
  5. Date — Provide the full date of the most recent update of the relevant webpage or, if this is not available, the date the document was created, if identifiable. The AGLC does not require you to provide the date you accessed the relevant site.
  6. Pinpoint — If you are able to give a pinpoint reference, do so. If the material accessed is a PDF document or similar (and so is a distinct document with its own pages), provide the relevant page number. If the material is simply a webpage in HTML format or similar and has distinct paragraph or section numbers, then use square brackets [ ] to identify the relevant paragraph or section.
  7. Uniform resource locator — Place the URL in pointy brackets < >.
