Other useful functions

Here are some other useful tips and tools available in Microsoft Word, which may help in your formatting journey.

Remove text formatting

Formatting a document correctly can take time and multiple attempts.
It is highly recommended that you retain an unformatted copy of your document, in case you need to start again.

It is possible to clear all text formatting from a document (such as bold, underline, italics, colours etc.) and return the text to the default Normal style. To do this:

  1. Select the text you want to return to its default style.
  2. On the Home tab, select the Clear all formatting icon.

Note: this will not remove page breaks or sections breaks, page numbering or captions applied within a document.

Quick Access Toolbar

The Quick Access Toolbar is located at the very top of Word. You can use the Quick Access Toolbar to access commonly used commands. Alternatively, you may want to add commands that you rarely use so you don’t have to remember where they are located.

To customise the Quick Access Toolbar you can either:

  • Click File > Options from the menu, and on the left of the Word Options window, select Quick Access Toolbar.

  • Select the  icon at the end of the Quick Action Toolbar and choose the More Commands... option.

When in the Word Options window:

  1. Open the Choose commands from drop-down and change this to All Commands.
  2. In the left section of the window, select the command to include in the Quick Access Toolbar.
  3. Click Add
If you want to add additional commands repeat steps 2 and 3.
  4. Once finished, select OK.

Page margins

There may be a specific page margin requirement for the presentation of a thesis. This can be related to a referencing style or the conventions of a field.

To set margins:

  • In the Layout tab, select the Margins icon and select Custom Margins.

  • The Page Setup window allows for different margins to be set for the top, bottom, left and right side of the page.
