Notes
  • Special Issues of a journal focus on a single theme – the numbering is usually the same volume and issue sequence – issue numbers maybe combined if it's a double issue. The special issue may have a separate editor and title of its own.
  • When citing, you can be referring to an article within the special issue / supplement OR the whole special issue / supplement. (example shows an article within).
  • Supplements are usually numbered separately to the regular issues. They can however have a title and editor of their own too.
  • See CMOS 14.77 and 14.78.

Notes
  • Many journals now use a continuous publishing model where each article is assigned a unique ID (or article number) rather than the traditional page range.
  • These articles will usually have a PDF version, and the pages will start at 1. These page numbers can be used in the footnote for quotes and paraphrases.
  • In the bibliography the Article number/ID goes after the colon : - where the page range would usually go.
  • See CMOS 1.91 and 14.78.
