The information on this page shows how to reference (but not reproduce) visual art sources in your assignments.  If you wish to reproduce images and figures in your assignment, please see Images, figures and tables (in this guide).

Artist, A. (Year). Title of artwork [Medium]. Location of the work (eg Gallery Name and City/State).

Picasso, P. (1937). Weeping Woman, [Painting]. National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.

Notes
  • Used for all types of museum artwork: paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, drawings,and installations.
  • Include a description of the medium in square brackets [  ]  after the title. Can be flexible, as simple as [painting] or more information [oil on canvas].
  • If art is untitled provide a description in square brackets in place of a title.

  • The examples above are from Artstor which are now incorporated into Jstor database. 
  • Artstor holds its own collections and so some references will contain the word Artstor in the source element - other refer back to the collection where the painting/sculpture/ image is held. 
  • They offer a citation for each of the images held in the Artstor - follow and edit where needed to be consistent with APA style.

  • For artwork in a museum or on a museum website, see APA Style Artwork References.
  • The in-text reference should include Creator, Year.  If the Creator is not known, use Title.
  • For untitled visual works, provide a description in square brackets.
  • If the publisher is the same as the creator, omit that part of the reference - see Better Health Channel example.
